Donorym ok ði Ains Vǫlr, or "Donorym and the Lonely Seer", in common is a religious myth in mixed prose and poetry that describes the introduction of alcohol to players by the god Donorym.

It is known that in the dark days, after the first war, Jǫrðar and Guldsjama had a son. His name was Donorym, and he lived among the earth-beings under Jǫrðar’s watch, though Guldsjama also saw him every day.


In that time, food was scarce and comfort far, so the tribes of playerkind battled often on the gravel-plains. It is said that without shoes, the gravel did more harm than the battles did.

Donorym wandered among them, though playerkind gazed upon him with suspicion, and the tribes had nothing to spare him. Donorym had no wish to take what pittance they had.

He ate and drank little, for he was a god. But still he often starved, when Jǫrðar had nothing to offer.

On one morning, on the path between the guide-stones, Donorym came across what could only be a seer. The seer wore a tattered traveler's cloak, but wore a leather headband embossed with gems. The seer walked alone, with no tribe of fellows. The seer saw Donorym also, and approached warily, for the seer had been robbed from before. Donorym spoke:

Hello, fellow! seer,

Why do you walk?

The path is dangerous!


Day helps you, fellow

But dark always comes.

Fool, you will die!


Alone, harm is near,

Welcome a friend,

To walk the night.

The seer replied:

Hello, loud-speaker

I walk to the guide-stone.

have faith in me.


I believe my safety,

But not your words.

Gods help me,


Not low men, during night.

Stranger, go,

Do not steal.


And to that Donorym replied:

I tell you,

I am no thief.

Take this offering


As proof of true-word.

Walk with me, safely

Start believing me!


And Donorym held up a drink as an offering to the seer. It was like no drink the seer had seen before, brown in color, and without the glimmer old potions were known for.

The seer took the drink. The seer did not yet believe Donorym completely, but the drink seemed special, like only a god could make it. Who would the seer be, to deny an offering like this?

Donorym took out his own bottle, and began to drink. The drink left him happy and dizzy, but he would still be able to walk.

The seer took a drink, and also was happy and dizzy. But when the seer tried to walk, they stumbled over rocks, and swayed unsteadily.

Donorym grew worried, and helped the seer keep upright on the path, and they both made it to the guide-stone before darkness came. The fire at the guide-stone protected them, but Donorym still looked out for monsters as the seer dozed away. By morning, the seer was able to stay upright again, and Donorym was apologetic. But when Donorym voiced his regret, the Seer cried out:

Sorry? You madman!

Beer is the best

I have drunk!


I will have more,

(My) sadness is done.

Please share it!

Donorym considered this, because it did seem to make the seer happy. But he had little drink to share, and told the seer so.

The seer let out the sign of a smile, for the seer was here to take the offerings left at the guide-stone, and that had to be enough to make another drink.

The seer gave Donorym the offerings, and the seer watched in fascination as Donorym used a boiling cauldron, a barrel, and bushels of wheat, to make more drinks.

Then the seer cast his eyes around, and did the same with the grass around the guide-stone, soon there were almost too many drinks to carry.

But still they walked to the nearest shrine, where people made their prayers. The seer left food there, for that was the seer’s job, but this time the seer also left the new drinks.

The seer bade Donorym to pray at the shrine with him, so they could wait for a tribe of players to come by.


It was not long before a tribe came, for it was morning still and the Dawn-Chant could still be said. They took notice of the odd drinks, and asked the praying pair if they knew of them. At this Donorym rose up.

Donorym spoke:

My name is Donorym

I made this drink.

I shall share it now,

For it chases out your sadness.


But take care, for it

Makes you foolish and excited.

Stop here and keep still

So you do not fall

Wanting their sadness to be gone, the tribe set up camp at the shrine, and said the Dawn-Chant:

I rise at the day's dawn, the day's dawn, the day's dawn!

Donorym was happy at the mention of the gods, and joined the chant. Guldsjama looked upon Donorym, and approved of his actions, so blessed the tribe with happiness that day.

It was not long before the potion-master of the tribe spoke to Donorym about making the drinks. Donorym was eager to share his knowledge with others besides the dour seer, so shared the recipe freely. It was soon recorded on paper by the rune-writers, so the recipe could not be lost.

It was as night fell that the tribe began to drink heavily, and the players began to party in earnest. The stars seemed to whisper news of the party to the wandering tribes of the gravel-plains, and soon more bands of travelers arrived at the party with food and goods.

Since the end of the First War, sorrow had finally been chased away.

In the ring of mountains south of the gravel-plains, Donorym became the master of drunkenness, comradery, and parties. After a day and a night, he sang a Dawn-Chant and left the party, to begin his wanderings once again, though he always brought happiness with him.
